Dr. Leonard Flemming (PhD Microbiology), founder of the WDL, noticed that there was a lack of quality feedback in the bacteriology division of veterinary diagnostics in South Africa, let alone the Western Cape. Leonard took the task to improve this service and to promote medical bacteriology as a method of great importance to guide clinicians in their diagnosis and use of antibiotics for treatment in animal health care.Although Leonard is highly skilled in culture and molecular techniques, he realised that a diagnostic service wouldn’t be complete without Haematology, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Pathology and all the rest. The Wemmershoek Diagnostic Laboratory has a team of enthusiastic veterinarians that perform specialized laboratory procedures and are at hand to give experienced advice on small and large animal samples and cases received in the laboratory.
